Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Find the shorter hour hand and the longer minute hand. Read the hour that has begun, count the minutes past that hour and write the time. An analog face by itself does not identify AM or PM.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Identify the current hour and count the minutes shown by the longer hand without confusing the two roles.

Worked example

The minute hand points to 6 and the hour hand is halfway between 3 and 4. What time is shown?

3:30.

The minute hand indicates 30 minutes. The hour hand has passed 3 but has not reached 4, so the current hour is 3. Its halfway position agrees with half of that hour having passed.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use a teaching clock to establish the different hand lengths before giving a page of independent practice.
  • Choose random generation for a fresh set or custom generation when the order of particular times matters to the lesson.
  • Ask the learner to check that the hour hand agrees with the minutes. Near the next hour, it can be closer to that next numeral while still belonging to the earlier hour.
