Recognize the rule behind a sequence

Each sheet has twelve questions. Choose lists of terms, formulas or a mix, and decide whether each sequence is arithmetic, geometric or neither.

Formula practice includes linear, exponential, fractional and recursive rules. Recursive questions state the first term so the sequence is fully defined.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish constant addition from repeated multiplication using terms, explicit formulas and initialized recursive rules.

Worked example

Classify 5, -10, 20, -40.

Geometric; the common ratio is -2.

Each term equals the preceding term multiplied by -2. The differences are not constant.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Check every difference or ratio in a displayed list.
  • A shift outside an exponential changes the sequence type.
  • Read n - 1 as part of the exponent when it is written above the base.
  • Start a recursive rule from its given first term.
