Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Check each sequence, evaluate the given formulas and write a formula from the first term and common ratio. Start with n = 1.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Connect the pattern with its formula

Each worksheet has twelve questions: identify a sequence, use an explicit formula to calculate terms, and build a formula from the first term and its common difference or ratio.

Choose integers, tenths or a balanced mix. Terms may be negative. Geometric practice uses integer common ratios, with parentheses around negative bases.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect repeated multiplication with an explicit nth-term formula, including negative common ratios.

Worked example

The first term is 1.5 and the common ratio is -2. Find four terms and an explicit formula.

1.5, -3.0, 6.0, -12.0; a_n = 1.5 × (-2)^(n - 1).

Multiply by -2 at each step. Parentheses make the entire negative ratio the base of the power.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Check each consecutive ratio before calling a sequence geometric.
  • A negative ratio makes nonzero terms alternate signs.
  • The exponent is n - 1 because the first term requires no multiplication.
  • Tenths practice uses decimal first terms and integer ratios.
