From terms to a finite total

Each sheet has four finite-list sums, four sigma-notation sums and four questions about the number of terms. Choose integer, tenths or mixed practice.

Finite lists show exactly which terms to add. Sigma sums give both limits, and every number-of-terms question includes a first term, last term and total.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect the first and last terms, number of terms and total of a finite arithmetic series.

Worked example

Find the sum of 5, 9, 13, 17.

44

There are four terms. Their average is (5 + 17) / 2 = 11, so the total is 4 × 11 = 44.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Count the terms before finding a finite sum.
  • In sigma notation, substitute the lower index to find the first term.
  • Use S = n(first + last) / 2 for an arithmetic series.
  • Keep a negative difference and a negative total when the arithmetic gives them.
