Start with a ready-made worksheet

Round to the requested decimal place. Use the digits to its right to decide whether to stay or increase. Keep exactly the requested number of places, even when the final digit is zero.

Keep the question and answer together

Ready-made PDFs are in English and include Letter and A4 versions. The file with answers adds a separate key with the same question positions. The preview shows the first page; downloads include every page.

Use the generator to change the rounding place, question count or worksheet language. A long teacher note or translated instructions may add a page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply place-value reasoning to decimal rounding while retaining the requested number of decimal places.

Worked example

Round 3.989 to the nearest tenth.

4.0

3.989 is closer to 4.0 than to 3.9. The increase carries into the whole-number part. Writing 4.0 records the requested one-decimal-place precision.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • For nearest-hundredth rounding, the first group has three decimal places and the second has four. The target stays the same as the inputs become more detailed.
  • Compare decimal values on a number line before teaching a digit rule. Numbers such as 2.49 and 2.50 make the halfway boundary visible.
  • Round directly to the requested place. Rounding repeatedly through intermediate places can change the final answer.
  • The printed worksheet language selects the decimal separator. For example, an English 4.0 prints as 4,0 in French; the mathematical value is unchanged.
