Start with a ready-made worksheet

Determine the sign, then multiply or divide the magnitudes. A fraction bar also means division; adjacent parentheses mean multiplication.

Four notations, two operations

A stacked fraction and the division sign both express a quotient. A multiplication sign and adjacent parentheses both express a product. This sheet uses signed integers; each division has an integer result.

Choose any nonempty combination of the four forms. The range controls the magnitudes of factors, divisors and constructed quotients, so a displayed dividend or product can be larger than that range.

Integers are rational numbers. For noninteger fraction operands, use our fraction multiplication or fraction division practice.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use sign rules consistently across multiplication and division written in four common notations.

Worked example

Calculate (−6)(−4), then 24 ÷ (−6).

24 and −4.

Two negative factors give a positive product. Dividing the positive product by one negative factor recovers the other negative factor.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Compare the same calculation in two different notations.
  • Begin with magnitudes 2–9 before moving to 10–20.
  • Check a quotient by multiplying it by the divisor.
  • Keep the multiplication sign rule separate from the rule for adding signed numbers.
