Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. Simplify the product, and use the sizes of the factors to check whether the result is reasonable.
Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.
Customize this worksheetLearning objective
Multiply numerator and denominator factors correctly and interpret how a fractional factor scales an amount.
Worked example
10/24 = 5/12.
The numerator product is 2 × 5 = 10 and the denominator product is 3 × 8 = 24. Dividing both by 2 gives 5/12. Taking two-thirds of 5/8 produces less than 5/8.
Teaching notes
Start with the default Friendly numbers for denominators 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Move to denominators 2 through 10 or 2 through 20 for a wider range, then choose 10 or 15 problems for the amount of practice needed. Every factor is a positive proper fraction, and the answer key gives exact products reduced to lowest terms.
Use this fraction-only page when both factors should be proper fractions. Choose Multiplying Fractions and Whole Numbers when one factor is whole or the wording should use “of,” and choose Multiplying Mixed Numbers when the factors include whole-number and fractional parts.
Friendly numbers uses denominators 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 with numerators through 9. The next level uses denominators 2 through 10 and numerators through 9; the highest uses denominators 2 through 20 and numerators through 19.
No. Each problem multiplies two positive proper fractions. Use the whole-number or mixed-number companion worksheet when those forms are the intended practice.
