Look for a numerator and a denominator in the product that share a factor. Divide both by that factor, show the changed values and then multiply. If no common factor exists, multiply directly.

Customize this worksheetLearning objective
Use common factors to simplify a product without changing its value, and recognize when no cancellation is available.
Worked example
(1/5) × (3/2) = 3/10.
Divide 14 and 28 by 14 to obtain 1 and 2. Divide 9 and 15 by 3 to obtain 3 and 5. The remaining numerator factors multiply to 3 and denominator factors to 10.
