Start with a ready-made worksheet

Inspect the spinner shown with each question. Every sector has the same chance; count matching sectors, including separate sectors with the same label.

Two diagrams, fourteen questions

Each worksheet uses two independently generated spinners and seven questions for each. Choose sector counts from 5 through 12, and number labels, letter labels or both. Repeated labels occupy separate equal sectors.

The printed labels make the diagram readable in grayscale. Compare chances by counting the sectors for each label; a label occurring twice has twice the chance of a label occurring once.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect a geometric model of equally likely sectors with exact count-based probabilities.

Worked example

A fair spinner has eight equal sectors labeled 1 through 8. What is the probability of landing on a number greater than 5?

3/8.

The sectors labeled 6, 7 and 8 match. The sector labeled 5 does not, because the event says greater than 5. Count three matching sectors out of eight equal sectors.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Check the number of sectors before using a denominator.
  • Count sectors, rather than the number of distinct labels.
  • Compare the printed diagram with the favorable outcomes in the key.
  • Explain that equal angles justify equal chances in the ideal fair-spinner model.
