Connect numerals with their number names

Each sheet has ten unique values and a separate answer key. Writing activities keep enough space for the complete response; matching activities keep all ten lettered choices on the same page as the questions.

Decimal names use fractional units such as hundredths. Number words and punctuation follow the selected worksheet language.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect a written numeral with its complete number name by reading three-digit periods in order.

Worked example

Write 4,020,305 in words.

four million twenty thousand three hundred five

Separate the number into 4 | 020 | 305. Read the nonzero value of each period and add million or thousand where needed. The zero in 020 does not add a spoken zero.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with two digits, then introduce hundreds before crossing a thousands boundary.
  • The mixed setting draws from your selected widths, from three through twelve digits. A short sheet need not include every selected width.
  • Ten-, eleven- and twelve-digit choices reach billions; they are extensions for learners who can already read smaller periods.
  • The zero setting lets you explore empty positions and whole empty periods. No whole-number question starts with a zero.
  • The English key uses US-style cardinal names without and between whole-number places. Regional classroom conventions may add and without changing the value.
  • Each sheet contains ten different values. Longer names receive additional writing lines and may continue onto a second page.
