Connect numerals with their number names

Each sheet has ten unique values and a separate answer key. Writing activities keep enough space for the complete response; matching activities keep all ten lettered choices on the same page as the questions.

Decimal names use fractional units such as hundredths. Number words and punctuation follow the selected worksheet language.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Build a numeral from its spoken periods and retain zeros in every unoccupied place.

Worked example

Write six million four thousand nine as a numeral.

6,004,009

The periods are 6 million, 4 thousand and 9 ones. Each period after the first needs three digits, so write 6 | 004 | 009. Omitting those placeholders would change the value.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with three digits before combining multiple periods.
  • Sketch a period chart when a name crosses millions or billions. Fill each period before joining them.
  • The largest width is twelve digits. Mixed practice can be restricted to only the widths used in the current lesson.
  • An absent scale name means its entire period may be zero. For example, one million five is 1,000,005.
  • The answer key repeats every word prompt and supplies its numeral, so learners can check which period caused a mistake.
  • A different printed language changes cardinal vocabulary and grouping punctuation, while retaining the same values for a fixed seed.
