Learning objective
Explain how each digit contributes to a whole number by writing its place-value addend.
Worked example
4,000 + 0 + 80 + 3
Four thousands contribute 4,000, zero hundreds contribute 0, eight tens contribute 80, and three ones contribute 3. Omitting the zero addend also gives a valid expanded sum.
