State the notation before reading it

These worksheets use ordinary subtractive Roman numerals through 3999. The 1000–4000 range also includes IV with an overline for 4000. The highest-range sheet explains this multiplier; ordinary IV still means four.

IV = 4 × 1000 = 4000

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same questions. Include answers to append a separate key, or download just the student worksheet.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Read and write canonical subtractive Roman numerals and interpret the stated overline convention.

Worked example

Write decimal 944 as a Roman numeral.

CMXLIV.

Split 944 into 900 + 40 + 4. The corresponding subtractive pairs are CM, XL and IV.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Recognize IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM as pairs.
  • Read a long numeral in hundreds, tens and ones groups.
  • Do not treat Roman notation as a positional base system.
  • For 4000, this worksheet uses IV with an overline: 4 × 1000.
