One value, two representations

Each sheet has eight questions in each direction. The selected decimal interval applies to the value, whichever base is printed in the question. Both endpoints are included so that the smallest and largest representations receive practice.

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same questions. Include answers to append a separate key, or download just the student worksheet.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Represent the same whole number in base ten and base two using powers of two.

Worked example

Write 13 in binary.

1101 in base 2.

The digits select 8 + 4 + 0 + 1 = 13. Reading the same digits as a decimal number would give a different value.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Write the place weights 1, 2, 4, 8 and so on from right to left.
  • Keep zeroes where a place contributes nothing.
  • Check a conversion by converting back.
  • Begin with 0–15 before introducing longer binary numbers.

Make it yours

Customize the practice
