Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Multiply by each digit of the lower factor, record the partial product in its correct place, then add the partial products.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Multiply multi-digit whole numbers by decomposing the multiplier and combining correctly shifted partial products.

Worked example

What is 236 × 14?

3,304

Multiply 236 × 4 = 944 and 236 × 10 = 2,360. Add the partial products: 944 + 2,360 = 3,304.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Label each partial row with the multiplier digit and its place value.
  • Estimate first so a missing zero or misplaced row is easy to notice.

Build a two-digit by two-digit multiplication worksheet

Choose the 2 × 2 digit preset on this page for double digit multiplication worksheets. Both factors will have two digits; the studio retains its other settings, including 16 questions. The initial page and ready-made downloads use two digits by one digit, so open the preset and download from the studio for two-digit multipliers.

For 34 × 26, first find 34 × 6 = 204, then 34 × 20 = 680. Add 204 + 680 = 884. Label the second row “20” to keep the tens value visible. An estimate such as 30 × 30 = 900 helps identify a misplaced row, though it does not replace checking the exact product.

Why does the second partial product shift left?

The 2 in 26 represents 20. Multiplying 34 by 2 gives 68; multiplying it by 20 gives 680. Record the place-value shift before adding the partial products.

What should I choose before or after the two-digit preset?

Use the default one-digit lower factor when multiplication facts and regrouping still need attention. After two-digit multipliers are secure, choose three digits or mixed lengths in Customize. The preset changes factor lengths, not a guarantee of regrouping in every problem.
