Start with a ready-made worksheet

Keep each sign with its factor. Determine the sign of the product, multiply the magnitudes, and use decomposition or a vertical rewrite when useful.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Choose an efficient horizontal multiplication strategy and determine the product sign from the factor signs.

Worked example

What is −18 × 7?

−126

One factor is negative and one is positive, so the product is negative. The magnitudes give 18 × 7 = 126.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Decide the product sign before multiplying the magnitudes.
  • Use independent-sign practice after learners can explain all four positive and negative factor combinations; a short random sheet may not contain every combination.
  • For larger magnitudes, write one helpful decomposition or rewrite the problem vertically.
