Learning objective

What this activity builds

Add the value of an explicitly chosen multiset of US coin teaching tokens.

Worked example

A custom row has 2 quarters, 3 dimes, and 1 penny. What is the total?

81¢

Two quarters are 50¢, three dimes are 30¢, and one penny is 1¢; 50 + 30 + 1 = 81.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Design early rows with one denomination before mixing several.
  • Each row accepts up to ten of each small coin and eight half-dollars. A blank half-dollar cell means zero; a completely empty collection has a total of zero. Choose real pictures when denomination recognition is part of the lesson.
