Start with a ready-made worksheet

Assume both premises are true. Use the conditional and its stated hypothesis to write the conclusion.

A conclusion justified by the premises

The worksheet gives a conditional p → q and the premise p. The required conclusion is q. Treat the stated rule as an assumption for the exercise.

This is modus ponens. It does not justify the converse inference from q to p, and it does not ask the learner to investigate whether an everyday rule is universally true.

A narrow selection can repeat the available expression forms. Use New problems to make another reproducible set, or return to the same settings link when you need the same questions.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize the valid inference from a conditional and its hypothesis to its conclusion.

Worked example

If a badge is valid, the turnstile opens. The badge is valid. What follows?

The turnstile opens.

The second premise supplies the hypothesis of the first. This is the pattern p → q, p, therefore q.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Label the hypothesis p and the conclusion q.
  • Find the premise that confirms p before writing q.
  • Use the given rule rather than guessing from everyday experience.
  • Ask the learner to explain which two premises justify the conclusion.
