Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Undo the addition or subtraction on both sides, then graph every value that makes the resulting inequality true.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Keep the solution exact, then graph it

Each set has ten inequalities with exact integer boundaries. The number-line window follows the answer, so larger positive and negative solutions remain visible. The key repeats each problem and explains its equivalent transformations.

The comparison checkboxes select symbols in the original question. A negative variable, a negative coefficient or the variable appearing on the right can mean that the solved inequality uses the opposite direction. Always normalize the relationship before choosing the ray.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Isolate a variable by adding or subtracting the same quantity on both sides while preserving order.

Worked example

Solve and graph 8 > x + 3.

5 > x, or x < 5.

Subtract 3 from both sides. Subtraction preserves the comparison, giving 5 > x. Reading with x on the left gives x < 5: an open endpoint at 5 and a ray to the left.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Name the quantity being added or subtracted before solving.
  • Write the inverse operation on both sides.
  • Include constant-left inequalities in discussion.
  • Check the boundary and one value in the shaded direction.

Relationships select the literal operator printed in each prompt. Dividing by a negative coefficient reverses the normalized solution direction.
