Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read the given points, answer the two coordinate-reading groups, then plot eight new points. A negative x value moves left; a negative y value moves down.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Keep the graph and the questions together

The student edition includes the graph and its questions or coordinate sequences. The answer edition adds completed work, including the points or paths the learner must draw.

The same settings and seed reproduce the same task. Use New problems to make another set, then check the preview before downloading.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the signs and order of two coordinates to locate a point accurately, including points on either axis.

Worked example

Compare (−4, 2) and (2, −4).

(−4, 2) lies in Quadrant II; (2, −4) lies in Quadrant IV.

From the origin, the first point is four units left and two up. The second is two right and four down. Changing the coordinate order changes both the position and the quadrant in this example.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Name the direction associated with each sign before plotting.
  • Treat points on an axis separately from points inside a quadrant.
  • Use a ruler or a finger to track perpendicular directions without drifting diagonally.
  • Check a plotted point by projecting back to both axes.
