Choose the right paper for the task

The grid contains fourteen equally spaced rings. The selected 2°, 5° or 10° interval controls spokes; the outside angle labels remain ten degrees apart.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Describe position using distance from a common center and an angle from the polar axis.

Worked example

If each ring represents one unit, how do you plot (3, 60°)?

Locate the 60° direction and mark the point on the third ring.

The radius selects the distance from the center. The angle selects the direction. The sheet leaves the radial unit for the teacher or learner to define.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • State the radial scale before plotting any points.
  • Start with familiar angles such as 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°.
  • Compare the same point described in polar and Cartesian coordinates.
  • Use finer spokes only when the task needs the additional angular detail.
