Select logarithmic or linear scaling for each axis. A logarithmic axis spans one decade from 1 to 10. Fine divisions apply only to log axes; label the units appropriate to your data.

Download the blank paper template for your own exercises, drawings or notes. Teaching explanations and worked examples are on this webpage; the PDF has no separate answer key.

Keep the printed spacing accurate

Linear grid spacing is exactly 1/4 inch at Actual size or 100% printing. Fine-log settings are retained while their axis is linear and become active again when that axis returns to logarithmic.

Select the matching paper size in the generator and printer settings. Print at Actual size or 100%; Fit to page and shrink options change physical distances. Check a known interval with a ruler before using the paper for measurement.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Compare additive change on a linear scale with multiplicative change on a logarithmic scale.

Worked example

Where does 2 lie between 1 and 10 on a logarithmic axis?

About 30.1% of the distance from 1 to 10.

Its position is log₁₀(2) ≈ 0.301 of the decade width. Integer labels on a log axis are not evenly spaced; equal distances represent equal ratios.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with powers of ten to explain what a decade means.
  • Compare a log-log plot with a semi-log plot of the same data.
  • Keep all values positive on logarithmic axes.
  • Turn on fine divisions only when more precise placement is needed.
