Select the number of graphs and the tick-label option. Every graph extends from −5 to 5 on both axes. Use one numbered graph for each example.

Download the blank paper template for your own exercises, drawings or notes. Teaching explanations and worked examples are on this webpage; the PDF has no separate answer key.

Choose the right paper for the task

Every small graph keeps square cells, the origin, axes and its graph number. Turning tick numbers off removes the numeric labels, not the coordinate structure.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Practice plotting and comparing points across all four quadrants.

Worked example

In which quadrant is (−3, 2)?

Quadrant II: left of the vertical axis and above the horizontal axis.

A negative x-coordinate moves left. A positive y-coordinate moves up. A point on an axis belongs to no quadrant.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use one large graph while introducing quadrant signs.
  • Use four graphs to compare reflected points.
  • Choose eight or twelve graphs for short independent plotting tasks.
  • Ask learners to label the quadrants before removing the tick values.
