Preserve compass widths

Equal arcs locate exact midpoints, perpendiculars, and copied angles for parallel lines.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use compass arcs to locate equal distances and construct parallel or perpendicular lines.

Worked example

How can you find the midpoint of segment AB without measuring its length?

Intersect equal-radius arcs centered at A and B, then draw their common chord.

The common chord is the perpendicular bisector. Its intersection with AB is the midpoint.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use the same compass opening from both endpoints.
  • Choose an opening greater than half the segment length.
  • Use a straightedge to connect constructed points.

Four print-first tasks cover midpoint, perpendicular-bisector, and parallel-line constructions with large paper workspaces. Native variants are fixed to provide complete teaching coverage; the source form exposes no task-specific controls.
