Copy, do not measure

A copied chord transfers an angle exactly. Equilateral and perpendicular constructions create exact 60-degree and 90-degree angles.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Transfer angles and construct standard angles without a protractor.

Worked example

How can you construct a 60-degree angle on a given segment?

Construct an equilateral triangle on the segment.

Equal-radius circles centered at the endpoints determine the third vertex. Every angle in the equilateral triangle is 60 degrees.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Keep the compass radius unchanged when transferring an arc.
  • Transfer the chord between arc intersections when copying an angle.
  • Leave auxiliary arcs visible for checking.

Four tasks cover exact angle copying plus compass-and-straightedge constructions of 60-degree and 90-degree angles. Native variants are fixed to provide complete teaching coverage; the source form exposes no task-specific controls.
