Identify the missing numerator or denominator. Use equal scaling or the equality of cross-products to find its exact value, then substitute it back into the original pair. Do not round a fractional blank.
Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.
Customize this worksheetLearning objective
Use equality and multiplicative relationships to solve a missing part of a fraction without assuming the answer is a whole number.
Worked example
□ = 9/2, or 4 1/2.
The missing numerator is 12 × 3/8 = 36/8 = 9/2. Substituting gives (9/2) ÷ 12 = 3/8. The scale factor from 8 to 12 is 3/2, so an integer numerator is not required.
