Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read the complete fraction at the start of the row. For each incomplete fraction, find the scale relationship and fill its missing part. Check every entry against the anchor, even when the row is shuffled.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Track equivalent representations without mistaking larger numerators and denominators for larger fraction values.

Worked example

Complete the equivalent row beginning with 2/3: 4/□, □/9, 8/□, □/15, 12/□, □/21.

2/3 = 4/6 = 6/9 = 8/12 = 10/15 = 12/18 = 14/21.

Multiply both parts of 2/3 by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The numbers used to name the fractions grow, but each fraction represents the same two-thirds amount.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Return to the anchor instead of guessing an additive pattern between neighboring entries.
  • Use shuffled rows to check whether the learner understands equality beyond a predictable sequence.
  • Ask which fraction has the greatest value; all completed entries should be equal.

Choose an equivalent fractions worksheet

Start with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10, then move to 2 through 10 or 2 through 12 for more varied multiplication facts. The tape-measure set uses 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64. Every worksheet has 10 rows; each row begins with a complete anchor and has six fractions with one missing numerator or denominator.

Leave Shuffle off while learners use the familiar ×2 through ×7 order. Turn it on when they are ready to identify each scale factor from the anchor without relying on the row sequence.

What changes when the fractions are shuffled?

The complete anchor stays first, but the other six equivalent forms appear in a mixed order. The values and one-part blanks do not change.

How is this different from the missing-numbers worksheet?

This worksheet builds each row with whole-number scale factors, so every blank is a whole-number numerator or denominator. Equivalent Fractions with Missing Numbers uses separate proportions whose exact missing value can be fractional.
