Calculate, then rewrite the result with coefficient magnitude from 1 up to but not including 10. Keep the exact value when shown; approximate signs identify rounded coefficients.

Exact arithmetic with a clear rounding policy

These questions treat numbers as exact values. They do not apply significant-figure rules for measured quantities. The final scientific coefficient has magnitude at least 1 and less than 10.

The key keeps exact terminating coefficients with up to six decimal places. Longer or repeating coefficients are rounded to three decimal places, with exact halfway cases rounded away from zero. An approximate sign marks that rounding.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Calculate with normalized scientific notation by combining coefficient arithmetic with powers-of-ten rules.

Worked example

Calculate (4 × 10⁵) × (3 × 10⁻²).

1.2 × 10⁴.

Multiply coefficients to get 12 and add exponents to get 10³. Rewrite 12 × 10³ as 1.2 × 10⁴ to normalize the coefficient.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Calculate the coefficient and exponent separately.
  • Normalize only after the operation.
  • Use an estimate to check the order of magnitude.
  • Separate ordinary exact arithmetic from significant-figure measurement rules.
