Exponents and radicals practice

Radical and rational exponents worksheets

Rewrite radicals as rational exponents, rewrite rational exponents as radicals and simplify exact perfect-power monomials. Each sheet has twelve source-aligned tasks with numeric, positive-variable or mixed expressions.

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Assume every variable is positive. Preserve the written numerator and denominator when rewriting; simplify exact perfect powers completely.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Keep the written fraction visible while changing notation

The denominator names the root index and the numerator names the outside power. A negative sign makes that radical power a reciprocal. Rewriting keeps the supplied fraction visible, even when it can be reduced.

Variables are positive, so the exact perfect-power simplifications are valid for even and odd roots. The worked key takes the root first, applies the numerator power and then takes a reciprocal when needed.

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same resolved questions. Answers follow on separate pages; choose the student-only edition when handing out the exercise.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Move exactly between indexed radicals and written rational exponents, then evaluate positive perfect-power monomials with roots through index six.

Worked example

Rewrite x to the power negative six-fourths in radical form.

One over the fourth root of x, raised to the sixth power.

The denominator 4 is the root index and the numerator 6 is the outside power. The negative sign makes the whole radical power a reciprocal; the written six-fourths is preserved.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Read the denominator as the root index.
  • Read the numerator as the outside power.
  • Move a negative rational power into a reciprocal.
  • Use the stated positive-variable domain before applying even roots.
