Start with a ready-made worksheet

Read each number. Color its circle blue if the number is even, or amber if it is odd. Use counters to check unfamiliar numbers.

Choose a useful starting range

Start can be any whole number from 0 to 20; end can be any whole number from 1 to 100 and must be greater than start. Both endpoints are included. Small ranges repeat in shuffled cycles to fill all sixteen circles. Even is blue and odd is amber; the key also uses parity words.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Explain whether a quantity can be arranged in pairs without anything left over.

Worked example

Should the circle containing 7 be blue or amber?

Amber: 7 is odd.

Seven counters make three pairs with one counter left over. Six counters would make three complete pairs, so 6 is even.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with the 0–10 preset and pair real objects before coloring. The ready-made sheet uses 0–21; custom endpoints are inclusive.
  • Zero is even: there are no objects left over when zero objects are arranged in pairs. Include zero in the discussion rather than treating it as an exception.
  • A short range can repeat numbers because every page has sixteen circles. Every value in a shuffled range is used before the next cycle begins.
  • Ask the learner to say or write even or odd as well as choosing a color. The separate key includes parity words, so color is never the only answer cue.
