Learning objective

What this activity builds

Explain how multiplying by a power of ten changes the value of every digit.

Worked example

Calculate 3.047 × 100.

304.700, which has the same value as 304.7.

Every digit takes a place worth one hundred times as much. The answer key retains three decimal places to match the original factor; a numerically equivalent answer without trailing zeros is also correct.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with tenths and ×10. Add hundredths and thousandths when students can explain each place.
  • Select one multiplier for focused practice or several for a mixed sheet.
  • Compare 0.6 ×10 and 0.6 ×100. The digit changes place because its value has been multiplied.
  • The smallest setting has only nine possible decimal factors. Longer sheets reuse problems after the available pairs have been practiced.
  • Use a place-value chart if a student adds zeros without considering the decimal point.
