Use words to understand a relationship

Use the examples to discuss what each quantity represents. The same word can occur in different relationships, so identify the unknown before choosing a mathematical symbol.

Print the complete English handout in Letter or A4, or choose another printed language below.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Translate relationships into mathematical symbols while checking what the question asks.

Worked example

Mia has 8 shells. That is 3 more than Leo has. How many shells does Leo have?

8 − 3 = 5 shells.

The phrase “more than” describes Mia, whose quantity is already known. Finding Leo requires subtraction. A familiar word alone cannot choose the operation.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Identify who or what each quantity describes.
  • Underline the question before choosing an operation.
  • Draw a bar or a group of objects to show the relationship.
