Worked example
One board is 2 3/4 metres long and another is 1 2/3 metres long. What is their total length?
2 3/4 + 1 2/3 = 3 + 9/12 + 8/12 = 4 5/12 metres.
The fractional parts make 17/12, which includes one additional whole metre.
