Read, model, calculate, check

Ask learners to identify what is known and what the question asks. A drawing, timeline or equation can make the relationship visible before they calculate. Check the answer against the original story and keep its unit.

The ready-made English downloads include practice alone or a separate answer key. The generator keeps the same questions in the preview and PDF, and a saved link reproduces the selected set.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Add fractions that measure amounts in the same unit and express a simplified result.

Worked example

A jug receives 2/3 litre of juice and then 3/4 litre. How much juice is added altogether?

2/3 + 3/4 = 8/12 + 9/12 = 17/12 = 1 5/12 litres.

Both quantities measure litres, so they can be added. Twelfths give a common-sized part.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Name the common measurement unit before adding.
  • Use a common denominator only for the relevant quantities.
  • Discuss why a total can exceed one whole unit.
