Read the region before adding

The diagram counts separate groups. Two sets have four regions and three sets have eight, including the group outside every circle. Identify the regions described by each question, then add those counts once each.

Choose a focused set of options while learning the notation. The preview and downloadable PDF contain the same questions, with the answer key kept separate from the student pages.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Translate everyday category statements into regions and count each person or item once.

Worked example

Seven learners choose only reading, five choose only art, three choose both and two choose neither. How many choose at least one?

15 learners.

Add 7 + 5 + 3. Include the overlap once, and leave out the two learners who choose neither.
