Identify the requested rounding place. Compare the two neighboring multiples and write the nearer one. When a number is exactly halfway, choose the greater multiple.

Keep the question and answer together

Ready-made PDFs are in English and include Letter and A4 versions. The file with answers adds a separate key with the same question positions. The preview shows the first page; downloads include every page.

Use the generator to change the rounding place, question count or worksheet language. A long teacher note or translated instructions may add a page.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use place value and distance to choose the nearest multiple of ten, one hundred or one thousand.

Worked example

Round 375 to the nearest ten, then to the nearest hundred.

Nearest ten: 380. Nearest hundred: 400.

375 lies halfway between 370 and 380, so choose 380. It lies between 300 and 400 and is closer to 400. The requested place changes the two values you compare.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Start with two-digit numbers and nearest-ten rounding. Move to three digits only after learners can identify the bounding tens.
  • Ask for both neighboring multiples before accepting an answer. This shows why changing a digit alone is not a complete explanation.
  • The fixed-width settings use the same digit width in both groups. Mixed settings increase the digit width in the second group.
  • Include exact multiples and carry cases in discussion: 80 stays 80 when rounded to ten, while 995 becomes 1000.
