Choose the skills, and the question count follows

Most arithmetic properties contribute two questions, the distributive property contributes five, and each inverse or equality rule contributes one. Selecting all types produces 30 questions. Each has four choices and one correct answer for the question asked.

The practice includes choosing examples and non-examples, recognizing rules, expanding expressions, and deciding which operations preserve or change a nonzero number. The key explains the selected answer.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Apply a property to choose a valid transformation or example, and distinguish it from a plausible but incorrect explanation.

Worked example

Which expression is equivalent to 6(x + 3)?

6x + 18.

Distribute 6 to both terms: 6 × x + 6 × 3. The expression 6x + 3 multiplies only the first term, while 6(x × 3) changes the addition inside the parentheses.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with order and grouping before selecting every property.
  • Ask for a reason after the learner chooses a letter.
  • Use the distribution-only setting to compare several ways the same law appears.
  • When working with a reciprocal or dividing both sides of an equation, state that the divisor cannot be zero.
