three and forty thousandths
There are three digits after the point, so the unit is thousandths. The fractional digits 040 represent forty of those units. Leading zeros keep the scale, and the final zero is still part of the requested precision.
Teaching notes
Make the practice count
- Every decimal has one digit before the separator. Use tenths before introducing longer fractional parts.
- These activities practice fractional-unit readings. Saying point zero four zero reads the digits, but does not name the requested place-value unit.
- Three hundredths is 0.03, while three thousandths is 0.003. Have learners write the denominator before converting it to a decimal.
- Trailing zeros preserve the requested unit even when another decimal has the same numerical value: 0.40 can be called forty hundredths.
- Allow zeros to include values below one and empty fractional positions. The no-zero setting excludes zero from every digit.
- Choose the printed language to change both the number words and decimal punctuation. The underlying digits stay the same.
