Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Align the hexadecimal places and calculate in base sixteen. Keep A–F uppercase and allow an extra leading digit when addition requires it.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

The range describes the operands

Choose addition only, subtraction only or a mixed sheet with eight of each. Addition results can exceed the selected range. Subtraction uses a larger first operand and a strictly positive difference.

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same questions. Include answers to append a separate key, or download just the student worksheet.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Calculate in base sixteen and represent carries, borrows and digit values accurately.

Worked example

Add hexadecimal 2F and 1D.

4C in base 16.

F + D means 15 + 13 = 28, or one group of sixteen and remainder twelve (C). Then 2 + 1 + the carry gives 4.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Translate A–F to their values when learning a column calculation.
  • Carry one when a column reaches sixteen.
  • Borrow sixteen units from the next place.
  • Verify 2F + 1D by checking decimal 47 + 29 = 76.
