Learning objective

What this activity builds

Use the whole-and-parts relationship to find an unknown addend and check it with addition.

Worked example

What completes __ + 7 = 10?

3

The whole is 10 and one part is 7. Count from 7 to 10 or subtract 10 − 7. The missing part is 3 because 3 + 7 = 10.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with a whole of 10 and counters, then move to 20 when pairs to 10 are secure.
  • Ask learners to name the whole and known part before calculating. The same relationship works when the whole is printed on the left.
  • A small whole has only a few possible pairs of parts, so a long sheet may repeat a pair only after every possible pair has appeared. Mixed formats balance the two blank positions.
