Learning objective

What this activity builds

Read a number bond diagram as one whole connected to parts and determine the single missing part.

Worked example

A tree has whole 10 and child parts 6 and __. What is missing?

4

The child circles are parts of 10. Since 6 + 4 = 10, the missing child is 4. The parent circle remains the whole and is never the blank.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Trace each branch from the whole to a part circle before calculating.
  • Start with two parts and a whole of 10. Add three-part trees only after the learner can combine two known parts before finding the remainder.
  • Allow zero when teaching that a whole can include an empty part. Turn it off when every part circle should represent at least one. A small set may repeat only after every possible arrangement of parts has been used.
