Choose the operations and the amount of support

Choose by the learner’s current skills. Mixing operations adds the task of recognizing a sign before choosing a method, even when the individual numbers are familiar.

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads contain the complete worksheet; the version with answers adds a separate key with matching problem positions. More spacious written-method practice may use several pages.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Choose the correct operation when a sheet mixes three familiar symbols.

Worked example

4 × 3 = ?

12

Four groups of three contain twelve altogether; adding 4 + 3 would answer a different question.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use this sheet after the learner understands all three operations; small digits alone do not make it a beginning counting task.
  • The pools select operands, not answers: products may be larger than nine.
  • Subtraction puts the larger selected digit first so its answer is nonnegative.
