Choose the operations and the amount of support

Choose by the learner’s current skills. Mixing operations adds the task of recognizing a sign before choosing a method, even when the individual numbers are familiar.

The preview shows the first student page. Downloads contain the complete worksheet; the version with answers adds a separate key with matching problem positions. More spacious written-method practice may use several pages.

What this activity builds

Notice the operator before combining or taking away small quantities.

Worked example

4

Start with seven and take away three. Check by adding 4 + 3 = 7.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Use small pools for an early lesson; the default first pool includes every digit from 0 through 9.
  • For subtraction, the larger sampled number is placed first. The first-number pool therefore does not guarantee the top operand.
  • Ask the learner to say “add” or “subtract” before calculating.
