Learning objective

What this activity builds

Locate numbers to 100 accurately and distinguish the small cell values from a large revealed digit.

Worked example

The hidden digit is 2. Should every cell containing a 2 be shaded?

No. Shade only the numbers in the list.

The large digit is a picture made from many cells. A listed value such as 34 is a location, not a part of the digit’s name.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Read a few cell numbers aloud and find them before beginning the picture.
  • Use the completed key to check locations rather than judging artistic neatness. Each correctly shaded cell can earn one point.
  • All ten digits have distinct original designs. They stay the same when the seed changes; use the digit selector to choose a different puzzle.
