Read the surfaces before naming the solid

Look for congruent parallel bases, a polygon base with triangular faces, or a curved surface. Student diagrams do not print the solid name.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize a solid by its faces, bases and curved surfaces.

Worked example

Which solid has six congruent square faces?

A cube.

A cube is also a special rectangular prism. The more specific name describes its equal square faces.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Look for the number and shape of the bases.
  • A prism has two congruent parallel bases.
  • Use a different seed to vary the order of the figures.
