Start with a ready-made worksheet

Name each figure. For quadrilaterals, use the most-specific name supported by the marks.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Read the marks before the shape

Tick marks show equal side lengths, arrow marks show parallel sides, and corner boxes show right angles. Use every guaranteed property, even when a rotated drawing looks unfamiliar.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Distinguish quadrilateral properties from the side counts used to name larger polygons.

Worked example

One figure has eleven sides; another has two distinct pairs of equal adjacent sides and no parallel sides. Name them.

Undecagon (hendecagon) and kite.

The eleven-sided polygon is named by its side count. The adjacent equal-side pairs identify the kite.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • For five or more sides, count around the entire outline.
  • For quadrilaterals, read the marks before choosing a name.
  • Selected types are eligible; a twelve-task sheet cannot show all fifteen types at once.

Twelve diagrams are drawn from your eligible quadrilateral and regular-polygon types. With more than twelve types selected, one sheet may not contain every selected type.
