Read the minute hand, then check the hour hand and say the time. Use reference cards to check the digital time.

4 cards on 1 page in the default deck. The image shows its first page. Adding the reference set produces 2 PDF pages in total.

Page count multiplied by cards per page determines the deck size. Repeated times are possible; the same settings and seed reproduce the deck.

The ready-made image shows page 1; each PDF contains the full deck. Cards with references adds a separate complete set with answers or annotations. These are not mirrored duplex backs and make no front/back alignment promise. Print at actual size and cut along the optional guides.

What changes the deck?

Fixed decks keep every card when density changes. Ordered fixed decks ignore the seed; choose Shuffled to use the seed for a different order. Time, number and money-amount decks generate a count from pages × density and can contain repeats.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Read hour and minute hands together to identify an analog time.

Worked example

The minute hand points to 6 and the hour hand is halfway from 2 to 3. What time is shown?

2:30.

Six five-minute intervals make thirty minutes. The hour hand has moved beyond 2 but has not reached 3.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with whole hours, then half hours or another named pattern. The default shows twenty-minute steps.
  • Fixed-minute choices repeat a named minute value; right-half modes use minutes 1–30 and left-half modes use 31–59 with the selected step.
  • The hour hand advances as minutes pass. Generated clocks may repeat, so ask for reasoning instead of assuming each card must show a new time.
