Read the starting number and the amount to remove. Say how many remain, then check the reference set.

4 cards on 1 page in the default deck. The image shows its first page. Adding the reference set produces 2 PDF pages in total.

Deck size is one plus the smaller of the fixed value and range endpoint. Fixed 3 gives four cards; fixed 12 with endpoint 9 gives ten.

The ready-made image shows page 1; each PDF contains the full deck. Cards with references adds a separate complete set with answers or annotations. These are not mirrored duplex backs and make no front/back alignment promise. Print at actual size and cut along the optional guides.

What changes the deck?

Fixed decks keep every card when density changes. Ordered fixed decks ignore the seed; choose Shuffled to use the seed for a different order. Time, number and money-amount decks generate a count from pages × density and can contain repeats.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Connect taking away with subtraction facts and nonnegative differences.

Worked example

What remains after taking 2 from 3?

1, so 3 − 2 = 1.

Build three counters and remove two. The one counter left represents the difference.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • The fixed value is the starting amount, not the amount being subtracted. Subtrahends run from zero to the smaller of that value and the selected endpoint.
  • The default fixed 3 deck contains four cards, even with the range set through 12. It does not generate negative results.
  • Use the teacher-led fixed 3 preset after learners understand taking away; include both subtracting zero and taking away the entire group.
