A reference to use alongside practice

The chart pairs the perfect squares from 1 through 2500 with their principal roots, 1 through 50. Cover one side to recall a fact, or use the full chart when extracting a square factor.

Its content is fixed. You can choose the paper size, printed language and a short page note without creating a different set of facts.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Recognize perfect squares and connect each nonnegative square root with its squared value.

Worked example

What is the principal square root of 1764?

42.

42 × 42 = 1764. The square-root symbol names the nonnegative root; solving x² = 1764 would instead give both −42 and 42.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Cover one side of an equality and recall the missing value.
  • Locate the nearest two perfect squares to estimate a root.
  • Use familiar square factors when simplifying a nonperfect root.
  • Keep square-root evaluation separate from solving a squared-variable equation.
