Ready to print

Start with a ready-made worksheet

Evaluate each power exactly. A negative exponent means take a reciprocal; parentheses show whether a minus sign belongs to the base.

Download the practice pages alone, or include a separate answer key or teacher model. Longer activities may use more than one page.

Choose one challenge at a time

Start with a focused choice of operations or expression types. Combine them when the learner can explain the rule being used, as well as calculate the result.

Read the domain printed on variable problems. A simplified expression must keep any values excluded by the original denominator or radical.

The preview and downloaded PDF use the same resolved questions. Answers follow on separate pages; choose the student-only edition when handing out the exercise.

Learning objective

What this activity builds

Evaluate an integer base raised to a selected whole-number or negative-integer exponent.

Worked example

Evaluate (−3)⁻².

1/9.

The negative exponent takes the reciprocal of (−3)². Two negative factors give 9, so the reciprocal is positive 1/9.

Teaching notes

Make the practice count

  • Begin with exponents 2 and 3 and compare negative-base results.
  • Write the repeated product before introducing shortcuts.
  • Add exponent zero only after discussing nonzero bases.
  • Practice one negative exponent before mixing all selected values.
